Who We Are

Literacy Partners of Orange County, New York, Inc. or Literacy Orange

• is a not-for-profit agency

• is dedicated to raising the literacy rate in our community through one-to-one or small group adult tutoring

• is governed by a Board of Directors and operates as an affiliate of ProLiteracy Worldwide.

We are financed through:

• grants from New York State Department of Education

• corporate and foundation grants

• personal contributions

Our services are completely free to the student.

What We Do

For our students:

• evaluate speaking, reading, and writing skills

• match each student with a tutor

• identify short and long term goals

• support students to make the experience a positive one 

For our tutors:

• provide training workshops

• match each tutor with a student or small group

• share materials, ideas, and lesson plans

• support tutors to make the experience a positive one

We ask our tutors and students for a commitment of 1 to 2 hours per week for instruction.

Why We Do It

“In the United States, an estimated 30 million people over the age of sixteen read no better than the average elementary school child.”

Adults need strong literacy skills:

• to raise children who have strong literacy skills

• to be good employees

• to keep themselves and their families healthy

• to be active in their communities

• to advocate for themselves and avoid human rights abuse

• to avoid crime
